PERSONNEL

SUKHWANT (a registered migration agent) was born in Singapore.  He completed his law degree with honours at the University of London (with a short stint at Cambridge University) and was called to the Bar (Lincoln’s Inn) in London in 1981.  He completed a Masters degree (London, 1982) in shipping, carriage of goods by sea, insurance (general and marine) and international law.  He was called to the Singapore bar in 1983 and has practised in London and Singapore.  In Singapore and London, he developed a practice in litigation at all levels relating to commerce, building and construction, company law, shipping law, general and marine insurance and public and private international law. On arrival in Western Australia in September 1988, he joined a national firm of solicitors before moving to a boutique commercial/tax practice to undertake general commercial litigation at all levels.  Upon recommendation of the then Minister of Consumer Affairs he was appointed a member of the Building Disputes Committee of the Builders’ Registration Board from October 1993 to April 1997. He was founder and WA President of the (national) Australian Lawyers Alliance. He holds memberships in the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the Australian Insurance Law Association.  He has developed a special interest in the export of legal services and as a member of the Australia-India Business Council, joined a ministerial and trade delegation to India headed by the then Federal Minister for Trade and the then Deputy Premier of the State of Western Australia, together with the then President of the Legislative Council (WA).  He is a member of the Western Australian Singapore Business Council, Australia-Malaysia Business Council and the Indian Chamber of Commerce.  Sukhwant has developed special interests in business and entity structures, estate and business planning, insurance and international business transactions.  He speaks several Asian languages.
