As we all have been told so often, we are living in unprecedented times. Whilst we in WA have been sheltered from the worst of the Covid issues that have beset other states, we  need to exercise great vigilance to ensure we and our families stay safe.

We have been disrupted from our usual routines and most of us, if not all of us, have had to make some big sacrifices and put in a big effort to keep us all safe and moving forward.

The way the world does business has changed dramatically and there has been a very powerful move to using technology.

The legal profession is usually a bit slow to adopt new technology and we believe this has not favoured their clients. The old ways are no longer the best ways.

We have a new way of connecting with our clients and we think this will very soon become the standard across the board. We are leaders in this movement in Western Australia.

The new world has accepted the electronic way of communicating with open arms and it is most unlikely that we will go back entirely to the “old ways”. It is the international experience that those who are exposed to the new ways adopt them and love them.

Getting clients into our offices and meeting with them is a huge inconvenience for them for a range of reasons.

• You need to get appropriately dressed,
• Lock up and leave your pet alone
• Make your way by car, bus or train or get a lift to your solicitor’s office,
• Find parking (which is always a problem)
• Pay for the cost of transportation, whichever type you use, from home and back again and the parking cost if you use your car, be at risk of an accident on your way to the meeting
• Wait for transport or in a waiting room all of this exposed to contact with other people who may not only pose a risk for something as serious as Covid and the discomfort if it is hot, windy, cold.

Today, a large number of services are provided electronically, often by Zoom, but there are other ways. You may have heard of Teledoc and suchlike in terms of which even medical consultations are now being held by telephone or audio-visual, obviating the need of patients to attend on their doctor in person unless, of course, determination is made during the discussion that there is a need for this.

Nobody would disagree that having a face-to-face discussion is better than simply having a telephone discussion. We love the idea and believe this will be in our clients’ interest for obvious reasons, not the least is that it will help keep us all safe from the Covid issues that are likely to be a problem for some time to come.
